Life in the United Kingdom Practice Test

The method being tested is that MPs are elected in single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post. In this system, voters in each area choose one candidate, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins the seat in Parliament. There is no requirement to secure an outright majority of votes across the constituency. This straightforward, single-vote, plurality approach is what determines who becomes MP in each area, and it’s why the overall Parliament can end up with a government that doesn’t mirror a strict national proportional split of votes. Instant-runoff, proportional representation, and personal achievements don’t describe how UK general elections allocate seats to MPs; those ideas involve different voting mechanics or criteria.
